Bureau Researchers Participate in 55th Rock Mechanics Geomechanics Symposium

Maria Nikolinakou chaired the American Rock Mechanics Association (ARMA)’s 55th Rock Mechanics/Geomechanics Symposium together with Gang Han from Saudi Aramco. The virtual conference took place from June 21 to June 25, with 600 attendees from 41 countries. The technical program had 5 tracks (Petroleum Conventional and Unconventional, Interdisciplinary, Civil, Mining, and Geothermal) and included 76 technical sessions, 4 keynote lectures, and the first ARMA diversity, equity, and inclusion panel of women in rock mechanics. The program also included two student research and project competitions, a student mentoring event, a rock photo contest, networking sessions, as well as a music gala and culture mornings and nights, all held online.

Several Bureau of Economic Geology researchers contributed to the technical program. Mahdi Haddad led various sessions and discussions on induced seismicity, and Ken Wisian and Shuvajit Bhattacharya organized a session for the inaugural Geothermal track.

Symposium material, including research papers, prerecorded presentations, recorded technical sessions, and keynotes, is available online through September 22, 2021. Nonattendees can access the material for a fee at https://texas2021.armarocks.org/registration/symposium/.
