Meet Dr. Timothy McMahon, New Tight Oil Resource Assessment (TORA) Project Manager

Tim McMahon

Please congratulate TORA’s new Project Manager, Dr. Timothy McMahon. He is a petroleum exploration geoscientist with over 25 years in the oil and gas industry, including 10 years with ConocoPhillips. He has worked on projects in Malaysia, deepwater Gulf of Mexico, Norway, the UK, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, California, China, and Ecuador. After leaving ConocoPhillips, he founded Cutlass Exploration, LLC, where he focused on conventional exploration in south-central Texas and providing geoscience consulting around play-based exploration, resource assessment, and application of machine learning to geological problems. He received a B.A. in geology from Rutgers University, an M.S. in geology from New Mexico State University, and a Ph.D. in geological sciences from the University of Texas at Austin. He has lived in 13 towns and cities, in 6 U.S. states, and 4 other countries. He enjoys travel, craft beer and home brewing, playing music, Southeast Asian street food, and word puzzles. He is married to a former Bureau employee, Amy Sapp McMahon, and has two daughters attending universities in the northeast U.S. He also has far too many small (and not so small) furry things running around the house.
