Dr. Charles Kerans
Professor and Robert K. Goldhammer Chair in Carbonate Geology, Department of Geological Sciences, Jackson School of Geosciences
Senior Research Scientist, Bureau of Economic Geology, Jackson School of Geosciences
Dr. Charlie Kerans' interest in carbonate geology cover aspects of carbonate sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy. Applied aspects of carbonate reservoir characterization, outcrop analog studies, and new approaches to 3D modeling are of particular interest. Current projects include field work in Australia, West Texas, and New Mexico. Subsurface datasets include reservoirs from the Cretaceous and Jurassic of the Middle East and the Permian of West Texas. New research directions are in quantitative modeling of outcrop and subsurface data.

My research focuses on marine environments and marine-continental transitions preserved within siliciclastic depositional systems. I extract clues from the sedimentary rock record in order to understand how paleoenvironments and paleoclimates evolved through time. For example, I am currently exploring how a greenhouse (warm) climate is reflected in the sedimentary rock record in both high- and mid-latitude environments. I utilize both field-based and subsurface data and apply various sedimentologic, stratigraphic, biostratigraphic, geochronologic and geochemical methods in my research. I am also involved in investigations that evaluate the evolution of petroleum systems by conducting source rock and reservoir evaluations in rift, forearc and foreland basin settings.
Ahmed Hassan, Ph.D., expected 2016 (Supervisor)
I'm interested in quantifying and describing the effects of carbonate depositional and diagenetic overprints on well-log signatures and production-governing properties. I am studying Pleistocene foreshore and shoreface ooid grainstone deposits on the leeward margin of West Caicos. By analyzing provenance, spatial distribution, and accumulation rates of these grainstones, I hope to understand the nature and evolution of strand plains and their contribution to shallow carbonate platform island formation.
