HotRock Geothermal Consortium Hosts Spring 2026 Sponsors’ Meeting
The HotRock Geothermal Research Consortium at the Bureau of Economic Geology recently hosted its Spring 2026 sponsors’ meeting at the Bureau's Houston Research Center, bringing together more than 30 participants from nine U.S. and international energy companies.
The meeting featured 14 technical presentations highlighting HotRock’s latest research in energy storage and in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) in granites and sedimentary reservoirs. Topics included EGS targeting using advanced geophysical data processing; reservoir flow simulation; designing hydraulic fractures in granites and shales; drilling and wellbore integrity challenges in geothermal; co-production of geothermal and lithium from the Smackover formation; geothermal for data centers; integration of geothermal with the power grid; and a techno-economic modeling tool that includes cost estimates. HotRock presented research results from Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, and Nevada sites.
The event also showcased the Bureau’s ongoing "The Texas Imperative" initiative on geothermal play fairway mapping for the Gulf Coast and East Texas, an overview of current DOE and Department of War funding opportunities in geothermal, and a lively discussion of the current challenges and opportunities in next-generation geothermal.
