Director Emeritus Scott Tinker Shares Insights at U.S. Naval Academy
Bureau of Economic Geology Director Emeritus Dr. Scott W. Tinker recently participated in the U.S. Naval Institute’s “Powering National Security: Securing National Supplies for the U.S. and Its Allies and Partners” panel discussion held at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Among those attending the panel discussion were Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, Superintendent of the Naval Academy Vice Admiral Yvette Davids, a host of other admirals and Navy officers, and a large number of midshipmen currently attending the Academy. The keynote speaker for the event was Pulitzer Prize-winning author Daniel Yergin.
Dr. Tinker’s remarks during the discussion began with an explanation of the key interrelationship between world income levels, energy consumption, and quality of life. He mentioned how access to energy had a direct correlation to the gross national product of nations across the globe. The importance in energy policymaking of striking a balance between energy sources that are affordable, are reliable, and are sustainable was also stressed. Tinker closed with a short presentation using detailed world energy statistics, which outlined his view of a “framework for global transition.”
