Bureau researcher and principal investigator of the Texas Consortium for Computational Seismology, Sergey Fomel, recently participated in a hackathon at the annual meeting of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE). The event allowed geoscience professionals and natural language processing experts to network with each other, work together, and demonstrate their expertise. The hackathon was an open software coding competition with the theme of natural language processing. The hackathon was organized by the EAGE AI committee and sponsored by AkerBP, Dell, Equinor, NVIDIA, and SLB.

Fomel won the Audience Choice Award in a team with Chevron’s Steven Braun. The team developed code that used the ChatGPT language model to automatically extract summaries and keywords from almost 900 EAGE expanded abstracts and to perform clustering data analysis based on the extracting keywords.

Please join all of us at the Bureau in congratulating Sergey Fomel for this exciting recognition of his exceptional work!
