Bureau Hosts 11th Annual Research Symposium

October 9, 2025

The Bureau of Economic Geology recently conducted its 11th Annual Research Symposium at its main office in Austin. Over 100 researchers and guests gathered to meet Bureau colleagues from other disciplines whom they may not have met before, to learn about current research projects across the organization, and to enjoy the good company and camaraderie of the Bureau family.

Researchers showcased 27 impressive research posters illustrating new geoscience concepts and ground-breaking scientific discoveries. Participants were also treated to 12 brief “nano talk” presentations describing everything from insights learned from ultra-high trace density 3D seismic data recently gathered from the Bureau’s Devine Test Site to an improved velocity model for locating earthquakes in South Texas.

This year’s symposium winners were selected by popular vote of the attendees. The winners of this year’s Best Poster award were Yiming Zhang, Bridget Scanlon, Jon Paul Pierre, Brent Porter, Hassan Dashtian, and Manmeet Singh for their poster, “Decadal Monitoring of Colonias Using Remote Sensing and Machine Learning.” The winner of the Best Nano Talk was Abouzar Mirzaei-Paiaman for his presentation, “Alternative Carbon Carrier Technology Could Improve Oil Production—and Carbon Storage Too.”

Symposium organizer, Linda Ruiz-McCall, extended special thanks to a broad group of Bureau staff for the effort that went into pulling the event together and making it so successful. Among those contributing to the Symposium were Cindy Kralis and the Events Team, Nancy Krail, Jason Suarez and the Media Group, Carson Werner, Poe Chen, Chuck Garza, Evan O’Donnell, and Daniel Ortuno.

Congratulations to all involved for hosting yet another informative, and fun, Annual Symposium!
