The Bureau of Economic Geology, under the guidance of The University of Texas at Austin, has gone to great lengths to ensure the safety of its researchers, staff, and students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bureau is excited to announce that core viewing facilities at all three of its massive core and cuttings archives in Houston, Austin, and Midland are now open to industry and the public for core analysis by appointment.

The ability to physically examine core and other rock material is indispensable to geoscience research, and reopening these core viewing facilities has been a top priority. Staff are on-site and working every day to pull core from shelves and lay it out for analysis by researchers. Specific core viewing areas have been set up, and, for safety, only one individual or group will be allowed to work in a core viewing room at a time.

“It is very important to be able to lay out and view cores because it is essential to research efforts,” said Nathan Ivicic, who administers the state’s three core research centers. “I have heard it said many times from geologists that there is no substitute for being able to see the cores in person.”

Groups are already being scheduled, so to set your appointment to view core and other rock material, contact the facilities directly.
