GCSSEPM Recognizes Bureau Researcher for Over 50 years of Excellence in Geoscience Research

April 24, 2025

The Gulf Coast Section of the Society for Sedimentary Geology awarded its highest honor, the Doris Malkin Curtis Medal, to the Bureau’s Dr. Bob Loucks this year.

With 2024 marking the 50th anniversary of his first publication, Loucks is known as both a talented researcher and as a prolific writer and contributor to over 200 papers, always seeking to share his research widely to further geologic understanding. He has been a real cornerstone of the Gulf of Mexico sedimentology community and an essential resource to many.

Beyond his impressive publication and service records, Bob has mentored and advised dozens of students throughout his career, many of whom are still practicing geologists in industry today.  He has been instrumental in raising the next generation of geologists, as well as in bettering those already in the field.

Although he might argue that he still has many things to investigate, and that he hasn't even come close to reaching the peak of his career, this prestigious honor recognizes his exceptional body of work and tremendous contributions to geoscience.

Please join all of us at the Bureau of Economic Geology in congratulating Dr. Bob Loucks!
