HotRock Geothermal Research Consortium Hosts 2025 Semiannual Sponsors’ Meeting

The HotRock Geothermal Research Consortium at the Bureau of Economic Geology recently hosted its semiannual sponsors’ meeting in Austin, in partnership with the Geothermal Rising Texas-Louisiana-Oklahoma Regional Interest Group and Exceed Geo Energy. The gathering drew nearly 50 participants, including representatives from more than 10 energy companies and state regulators.
The meeting featured ten technical presentations highlighting HotRock’s latest research, including geothermal resource assessment for Enhanced Geothermal System and closed-loop systems; non-seismic geophysical data processing; dynamic reservoir modeling; high-temperature laboratory experiments; artificial intelligence/machine learning for predicting regions with high heat flow; thermal demand mapping and techno-economics; and integration of geothermal energy with the power grid.
In addition, attendees participated in a hands-on workshop on geothermal play fairway mapping in the western U.S. They came away with innovative new tools and workflows.
The event also showcased the Bureau’s ongoing “Texas Imperative” initiative on geothermal play fairway mapping for the Texas Gulf Coast and East Texas, covered the DOD’s geothermal initiative for energy dominance, and held a lively panel discussion on the current challenges and opportunities in geothermal energy.
