FACIES TRACTS

Teichert (1958) defines facies tract as “a system of different but genetically interconnected sedimentary facies of the same age.” This concept groups depositional systems into an order across a platform depending on the characteristics of the platform such as wheather it is a ram or rimmed platform. All the depositional systems within the facies were deposits during one sedimentary cycle.

At top: a depositional systems map showing the depositional systems of the platform. The alignment of the depositional systems across the platform produces a facies tract. Projected below: a simplified topographic cross section across the platform showing the facies tract.
