February 2024:  We are excited to share our latest research paper titled “Comparative Life-Cycle Assessment of Electricity-Generation Technologies:  West Texas Case Study,” just published in the Energies journal of MDPI.

In this study, we conducted a comprehensive comparison of five different power plant technologies in West Texas, aiming to offer decision-makers and stakeholders a holistic understanding of the life-cycle environmental impacts associated with these electricity generation technologies.  Our global supply chain analysis revealed varying impacts on host communities worldwide, providing crucial insights for stakeholders to identify hotspots with the highest environmental impacts.  The results can pave the way for informed decision-making, promoting sustainability in electricity generation choices.

This research was made possible through the generous efforts of the CEO team (Dr. Jani Das, Atta Ur Rehman, Rahul Verma, Gurcan Gulen, and Michael Young). We express our gratitude to the “Comparing Electricity Options,” Industrial Affiliates Program of the Bureau of Economic Geology and The Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin.

February 2023: Daniel Graf visited West Virginia University (WVU) to work with Dr. Julian Hwang, an assistant professor in the Division of Resource Economics and Management at WVU. Together, they developed a framework to facilitate the comparison of environmental impacts calculated across technologies and methodologies.

June 29, 2022: Dr. Young presented preliminary results at the Critical Materials Institute webinar series.

June-August 2022: two Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) are working on a research collaborative internship with the Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, a premier data and market intelligence provider, on lithium-ion battery supply chain. They are working on nickel and graphite LCAs.

May 30, 2022: Drs. Young and Gülen presented preliminary results at a webinar hosted by the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE).

March 22, 2022: the CEO program joined the Critical Materials Institute as an affiliate member. CMI is part of U.S. Dept. of Energy’s (DOE) Ames Lab.

May 2022: Two GRAs, Andrew Kleiman and Zachary Harner, graduated with their Master’s degrees from UT Austin’s Energy and Earth Resources (EER) program, and GRA Katherine Jones graduated with her Master’s degree from the Department of Geological Sciences. Their theses are on the LCA of cobalt and lithium, and on ecosystem services impacts from wind energy development, respectively. Congratulations to our students!

March 2022: Zachary Harner and Hazal Kirimli presented research at the International Battery Seminar in Florida. Their presentations led to establishing collaboration opportunities with several companies active in battery supply chains. Primary information from such companies is critical to consistency of the CEO research with current industry practices.

March 26, 2022: Andrew Kleiman, Zachary Harner and Hazal Kirimli presented research at the Jackson School of Geoscience Symposium.

February 27th to March 2nd 2022: The CEO research team comprising Dr. Rehman along with Graduate Research Assistants (Andrew Kleiman, Zachary Harner, Hazal Kirimli and Daniel Graf) attended the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration conference in Salt Lake City, Utah and presented their work on critical minerals (nickel, cobalt, and lithium) supply chains through a total of six presentations. The team received compliments on the comprehensiveness of the CEO research.

November 9-10, 2021: Project researchers presented “Comparing Electricity Options: Life-Cycle Analysis of Electricity Choices” at the Energy and Mines (Virtual) World Congress. The meeting was attended by mining companies, energy companies, and many other services organizations.
