Dr. Shirley Dutton’s technical expertise lies in sandstone petrography and diagenesis, particularly the relationship between diagenesis and porosity, permeability, and other petrophysical properties of oil and gas reservoirs. She has experience in genetic stratigraphy and basin analysis as well, including core studies and subsurface analysis for interpreting clastic depositional environments and using organic geochemistry to assess hydrocarbon source-rock quality and thermal maturity.
Dr. Dutton's current research involves diagenesis and reservoir quality of Tertiary sandstones in the Gulf of Mexico buried to depths greater than 4.5 km. Dr. Dutton has broad experience in geologic characterization of low-permeability sandstone gas reservoirs. Other recent projects include preparation of a portfolio of oil plays in the Permian Basin of west Texas and southeast New Mexico, studies of well-exposed outcrop analogs of deltaic reservoirs for characterizing interwell-scale heterogeneity, including reservoir-scale diagenetic heterogeneity, and reservoir characterization of a mature oil field producing from a Permian deepwater turbidite deposit in West Texas.
