The Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation and the Oil, Gas & Mineral Law Section of the State Bar of Texas co-sponsored a special institute on basic petroleum geology at the Warwick Hotel in Houston, Texas, March 8–9, 2001.

The conference, titled "Basic Oil and Gas Geology and Technology for Lawyers and Other Non-Technical Personnel," was designed for lawyers and others in the legal field who practice before oil and gas conservation commissions and litigate technical oil and gas-related issues in court; prepare and communicate with expert witnesses and consultants; draft agreements for exploration, drilling, and production project financing; and otherwise generally meld the law with oil and gas operations in the field.
