Bureau coastal outreach program succeeds in the field and the classroom

June 8, 2016

On May 17, 2016, Corpus Christi Cunningham Middle School students participated in the final Texas High School Coastal Monitoring Program (THSCMP) field trip for the 2015-16 academic year. Led by Bureau scientist and program coordinator Tiffany Caudle, students and teachers from participating schools collect beach monitoring data in the field three times throughout the academic year. The field studies teach practical scientific methods by measuring topography, mapping the shoreline and vegetation lines, and observing weather and wave conditions. In the classroom, the student’s field data is used to better understand dune and beach dynamics on the Texas Coast though class lessons and projects. The data is also entered into a database at the Bureau’s coastal studies group in Austin.

THSCMP has 8 participating schools - Galveston Ball, High Island, Palacios, Port Aransas, Port Isabel, and Van Vleck High Schools and Cunningham and Tidehaven Middle Schools – and covers the Texas coast from High Island on Bolivar Peninsula to South Padre Island.  Now in its 19th year, the highly successful outreach program is sponsored by the Texas General Land Office Coastal Management Program, the Trull Foundation, and the Jackson School of Geosciences.
