Bureau Director Scott W. Tinker with Professor Wenzhi Zhao, the President of RIPED of Petrochina

The Bureau’s ongoing scientific collaboration with China continued recently with a fruitful trip to that country by Bureau director Scott Tinker and research scientists Hongliu Zeng, Svetlana Ikonnikova, and Tongwei Zhang.

On February 29, the team visited Xi-an to attend a final project review meeting for “Lacustrine Shale Gas Reservoir Characterization in the Yanchang Formation,” a 2-year project funded by the Yanchang Petroleum Group. Zhang and Zeng, principal investigators of the project, reported research results to Yanchang Petroleum Group staff, and Tinker conducted a half-day workshop for the group. Key results and discoveries from the project will be published in a special section of Interpretation: “Lacustrine shale characterization and shale resource potential in Ordos Basin, China.” Also on this day, Director Tinker and Professor Xiangzeng Wang, vice president of the Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum Company, discussed future research projects on shale gas and tight oil resources.

On March 2, the Bureau team visited the Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development (RIPED) of PetroChina; on March 4, the Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Production (RIPEP) of Sinopec. Director Tinker met with Professor Wenzhi Zhao, president of RIPED, and Professor Zhijun Jin, president of RIPEP, to discuss potential collaborations in unconventional resources. At both institutes, Tinker and Ikonnikova gave presentations on Bureau Industrial Associates programs to geologists, engineers, economists, and managers, encouraging RIPED and RIPEP to consider membership in select consortia.

On March 3, the Bureau researchers visited the Oil and Gas Survey Center (OGSC), China’s Geological Survey of the Ministry of Land and Resources.

OGSC is a newly established, nonprofit organization that focuses on basic research on nationwide oil and gas resources distribution, resource-potential assessment, and improving oil and gas exploration theory and technology. Director Tinker and Professor Gangyi Zai, deputy director of the OGSC, signed the framework of a cooperative agreement between the two organizations. The OGSC and the Bureau will jointly collaborate on a wide range of research projects in shale gas and shale oil resources, as well as on the “International Science and Technology Cooperative Specific Program,” which was initiated by the Chinese government.
