Giving back to the community is so much a part of the culture at the Bureau of Economic Geology that staff members requested an opportunity to work with their colleagues in a service project. On March 29th, twenty-five hard working volunteers restored a wildflower area and improved trails in a Day of Service at Great Hills Park in Austin. Work included clearing and hauling brush and small saplings to open space for wildflowers, all while avoiding the many poison oak vines. The organizers of the event (Eric Potter, Linda Ruiz McCall, Jan Braboy, Donnie Brooks, and Melissa Coffman) identified two main areas in the park that required attention. Characteristic of this dedicated group, work went above and beyond expectations and included cutting overgrowth on several trails and some litter removal. At the end of the day, volunteers left with a few sore muscles and the great satisfaction of knowing their work improved a community park for the Bureau’s neighbors in the area.
