The Bureau Welcomes Distinguished Professor Torres-Verdín

October 12, 2016
Carlos Torres Verdin

Senior Research Fellow Carlos Torres-Verdín

Renowned University of Texas at Austin petroleum engineering professor and researcher Carlos Torres-Verdín has joined the Bureau of Economic Geology. Dr. Torres-Verdín will collaborate on multiple research projects that involve geology, petrophysics, and geophysics, such as the fledgling Advanced Reservoir Geophysics (ARG) consortium, where he will work alongside Bureau researchers Bob Hardage and Sergey Fomel.

Dr. Torres-Verdín completed his B.Sc. in engineering geophysics at the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico. He holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering from UT-Austin and a Ph.D. in engineering geoscience from the University of California, Berkeley. Since 1999, the award-winning Dr. Torres-Verdín has been a professor in UT’s Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on well logging, formation evaluation, integrated reservoir characterization, nonlinear optimization, inverse theory, and computer programming.

Dr. Torres-Verdín will help the ARG develop new production-oriented, geology-consistent geophysical technologies to significantly improve the quantification and monitoring of reservoir conditions and performance. The goal of the ARG is to dramatically increase the resolution with which geophysical measurements are used to detect, quantify, and optimally manage reservoirs containing fluids that need to be extracted as well as fluids that need to be injected and stored. For more information on joining the consortium, please contact Bob Hardage.

Please join all of us at the Bureau in welcoming Professor Carlos Torres-Verdín!
