On June 16 and 17, the Petroleum Technology Transfer Council held a workshop at BEG's Houston Research Center on open software for reproducible computational geophysics. The event, organized by Karl Schleicher of the Texas Consortium of Computational Seismology (TCCS) and BEG's Robert Newsham, centered largely on open-source Madagascar software and included application presentations, live demos, and spirited discussion. More than 40 attendees saw presentations by 15 presenters, including Schleicher and TCCS PI Sergey Fomel.

From July 11 through 14, the Center for Energy Economics (CEE) led a training program on oil value chain economics for Uganda energy-sector directors and professionals in Kampala, Uganda. Dr. Michelle Foss and Dr. Gurcan Gulen served as facilitators and instructors for the event, which was sponsored by the U.S. Department of State-Energy Governance and Capacity Initiative and U.S. Agency for International Development. Dr. Foss was invited to join the Technical Advisory Group for Natural Resource Charter, led by Paul Collier, Oxford University, and chaired by former president of Mexico, Dr. Ernesto Zedillo, and she attended the annual Charter Conference June 29-30. On June 28, Dr. Foss gave a presentation as a member of the American Gas Association LNG 17 panel for Wall Street in New York City. Other panel members were LNG 17 Executive Director Jay Copan; Bob Ineson, IHS-CERA; Geoff Couper, JP Morgan; Curt Launer, Deutsch Bank; and Ronald Barone, UBS. On June 15, Dr. Foss gave a keynote address at the SPE Unconventional Gas Conference in The Woodlands, Texas.

Bureau researchers have traveled America from coast to coast this summer as teachers in the Jackson School's GeoFORCE program. Tiffany Caudle (above) talked to 9th-grade students about coastal processes on the Florida coast; she later led students on a similar field trip to Port Aransas on the Texas coast. Jeff Paine (below left) toured the Pacific Northwest with 11th-grade students, and Peter Flaig (below right) taught 10th-grade students at the Grand Canyon while traversing Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. Other Bureau instructors include Xavier Janson, Sigrid Clift, Scott Rodgers, and Associate Director Eric Potter.

On July 14, the Gulf Coast Carbon Center (GCCC) convened its biannual sponsor's meeting at the Bureau's Houston Research Center, with special focus on what has been an active summer for the group and its partners. PI Susan Hovorka welcomed attendees with a review of GCCC's current research plan and a look forward through 2014, conducting a session on "Technology Intersection with Policy" and an update on the SECARB program as well. Sigrid Clift spoke on GCCC's evolving outreach and provided an overview of the group's ambitious public-education programs. Bureau researchers also presented their latest work: Alex Sun spoke on "Above-Zone Groundwater Monitoring," Seyyed Hosseini spoke on "Reservoir Characterization and Modeling Perspective," and Vanessa Nunez presented "Novel Modeling Approach for the Monitoring of CCS Sites." Tip Meckel presented an update on the Offshore Carbon Repository, including completed groundwork and planned research for the next 6 months, and Katherine Romanak presented "New Soil-Gas and Groundwater Methods."

Julie DuikerOn May 3, 15 members of the PRC Campus Research Administrators met at the Bureau. The group, composed of research administrators and other departmental administrators, work together to provide support and expertise to those who develop and administer University of Texas research programs and projects. Hosted by the Bureau’s Julie Duiker, the group heard a presentation by David Ivey, UT’s new Export Control Officer, on current standards and practices regarding access, reporting, and information management.

Dr. Michelle FossOn July 20 in Houston, Dr. Michelle Foss gave a presentation titled "Economic and Policy Perspectives on U.S. Reserves and Resources" at the SPE/AAPG/SPEE Reserves and Resources Estimation and Reporting Symposium. Her presentation was part of the panel on "Policy, Regulatory, and Financial Perspective on Using Reserves and Resource Numbers."
