Kangean Islands outcrop

In November Dr. Xavier Janson and Takashi Shimazu, a visiting scientist from JAPEX at the RCRL, traveled to Indonesia to visit the Kangean Energy Indonesia Ltd. office in Jakarta and study outcrop in the Kangean Islands in Eastern Java. They spent 10 days in the field mapping Miocene carbonate facies and measuring fractures as an analog for nearby oil and gas fields operated by KEI.

AEC 2010 Projects Review Meeting in Austin, Texas
The Advanced Energy Consortium held its year-end biannual All Projects Review meeting on Dec. 7-9, 2010 at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus at The University of Texas at Austin. Over the course of two and a half days, thirty four AEC funded Principal Investigators and research teams presented this year’s exciting summary of results. One hundred and fifty three participants, including both engineers and scientists from academic and oil and gas industry member companies (BakerHughes, BP, ConocoPhillips, Halliburton, Marathon, OXY, Petrobras, Schlumberger, Shell, and TOTAL) networked and discussed progress towards meeting the challenge of using nanosensors in the reservoir. Scott W. Tinker, the AEC’s director, opened the meeting with a keynote discussing Global Energy Oil Demand and Supply, future Energy Options and the AEC’s mission in the context of needed solutions. All 34 research projects were reviewed in detail and concluded with a researcher panel discussion for each thrust, focused on addressing research needs for 2011-2015.

The Carbonate Reservoir Research Characterization Laboratory (RCRL) visited three major oil companies in China during the week of February 21. A series of lectures on carbonate pore networks, reservoir modeling, and seismic interpretation were presented to PetroChina in Hangzhou, Sinopec in Chengdu, and BGP in Zhuozhou by Xavier Janson, Chris Zahm, Hongliu Zeng, and Bob Loucks. The RCRL group hopes the visit leads to joint research opportunities with these companies. A. I Levorsen Award winners
In January, Bob Loucks, Rob Reed, Steve Ruppel, and Uschi Hammes were notified that they were recipients of the A. I Levorsen Award for the best paper presented at the October 10–12, 2010, GCSSEPM/GCAGS meeting in San Antonio. The paper is titled "Preliminary Classification of Matrix Pores in Mudrocks."This same paper received a Third Place GCSSEPM/GCAGS Grover E. Murray Best Published Paper Award as one of the most outstanding papers published in the GCAGS Transactions volume. Tucker Hentz also received a 2010 GCAGS award—Third Place, Gordon I. Atwater Best Poster Award for his poster titled "Regional Lithostratigraphy of the Eagle Ford Shale: Maverick Basin to East Texas Basin." Congratulations one and all!
