On November 5, Steve Ruppel presented a day-long workshop to more than 25 geologists, engineers, and managers of ConocoPhillips in Houston. Focus of the workshop was the Leonardian carbonate system in the Permian Basin. The goal of this and future workshops given under the auspices of the Permian Basin Geological Synthesis Project that Steve is directing is to provide PBGSP member geoscientists and engineers with a detailed perspective on hydrocarbon reservoir successions in the Permian Basin. |

| The 2008 AAPG International Conference and Exhibition was held October 26-29 in Cape Town , South Africa , and as President, Bureau Director Scott Tinker took center stage. On October 26, he presented "Energy Security: Build Bridges , Not Walls" during the opening ceremony of the conference. On October 27, during the Oral Session: Geoscience Workforce of the Future-The Great Crew Change, he spoke on "Energy Workforce: Understanding and Adapting to Cycles." And on October 29, he presented "The Advanced Energy Consortium: A New Model for Funding and Conducting Precompetitive Research in Micro-and Nanotechnology for Improved Subsurface Understanding." Scott also officiated at ceremonies, including a presentation of appreciation to the Conference Chairman (see photo: on left Scott Tinker with General Chair Sipho Mkhize; on right Scott Tinker with General Vice Chair Jeff Aldrich). |

| CEE had a busy October. On the 17th CEE opened its FY 09 series of Think Day breakfast forums with CEE and CSIS advisor Mr. Luis Giusti, who shared his perspectives on Latin America’s energy and politics. On the 24th CEE held its second annual executive program “New Era in Oil, Gas & Power Value Creation,” hosting delegates from Brazil, Ghana, Indonesia, Kuwait, Nigeria, South Africa, and USA. Companies represented included research institutes, regulatory agencies, and private and national oil companies. On the 28th a special luncheon forum was given by CEE, which featured Honorable Iris Evans, Minister of Finance and Enterprise, Province of Alberta, Canada. The event was titled “Adding Value in Alberta’s Oil Sands: Challenges and Opportunities.” |

On October 30 Ruarri Day-Stirrat presented a Current Research in Earth Sciences seminar at Rice University. His talk, “Controls on the Reorientation Mechanisms of Phyllosilicates: Gulf of Mexico, North Sea, Podhale Basin, and the Barnett Shale,” was well received. Ruarri also spent the day discussing many aspects of mudstone systems with faculty and graduate students. |
