Research Scientist F. Jerry Lucia has been
named a “50-Year Fellow” by the Geological
Society of America in recognition of his 50 years
of support and commitment to the Society. This honor is accompanied
by a letter of recognition from John W. Hess,
Executive Director of GSA, and a gold pin.

Professor, The University of Texas at El Paso Geology
Department.
On
October 22–23, 2004, the Jackson School’s
Luciano Correa, Philip Guerrero,
Leonel Gomez, and Sigrid Clift
attended the Society for the Advancement of
Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS)
annual conference
as exhibitors. More than 2,300 undergraduate science,
math, and engineering students from across the U.S.
attended. At the conference, they gave
presentations, presented poster sessions, and learned about
future employment and graduate school opportunities.

Advisory Committee to the Bureau
of Economic Geology held its biannual meeting
on October 21, 2004, here at the Bureau. The meeting
featured

John
Andrews talks to parents and kids about 3-D models at the
Bureau’s Adventures in Virtual Reality exhibit.
On
Saturday, October 16, 2004, Bureau staffers John Andrews
and Sigrid Clift exhibited at the 2nd
Annual Science Fest at the Science Stuff Store
in Austin. More than 600 people, who included families and bus
loads of students and teachers, attended the event. The fest
comprised virtual reality tours, robots, live reptiles and spiders,
forensic science, and many more science exhibits. 10/19/04
The
5th annual Austin Earth Science Week Career Fair
for 350 middle school students and their teachers was
held at the U.T. Commons Conference Center on October
12, 2004. Students represented Benold
(Georgetown), Lake Travis, Porter
(Austin), Pflugerville, and Murchison
(Austin) middle schools. The highlight of the fair was
the keynote presentation
given by NASA Astronaut, CaptainDominic
Gorie, titled An
Astronaut’s
View from Space. This annual
event, organized by the Austin Earth Science Week
Consortium, issponsored by
many local organizations,
NASA
Astronaut Dominic Gorie visits with students at the career
fair. Astronaut Gorie has commanded three missions—the
final Shuttle-Mir docking mission, the Shuttle Radar Topography
mission, and a flight to the International Space Station.

October 7 and 8, Scott Tinker and Luis
Barreda attended a forum titled “Growth
in the 21st Century: the Challenge of Regional Competitiveness”
that was held in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico. The conference
was organized by the office of the governor of Tamaulipas,
Tomas Yarrington, to address the importance
of, and regions’ contribution to, national competitiveness;
the role of the energy
sector in regional growth; innovative response to market changes
through a profitable use of information technologies; and key
policies for increasing the competitiveness of the northeastern
region (states bordering the U.S.) in order to contribute to
Mexico’s future growth. [More]

At the 4th Annual Houston Louis
Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation
(LSAMP) Conference on October 2, Laura
Zahm and Sigrid Clift gave
presentations on careers in the geosciences to undergraduate
students. LSAMP is a partnership
of
the National Science Foundation, University
of Houston, Texas Southern University, Texas
State University, Rice University,
University of Houston—Downtown,
University of Houston—Victoria, Houston
Community College System, San Jacinto College
District, and Houston Independent School District.
Its goal is to increase the number of minority students who
major in math, science, and engineering.

The
Reservoir Characterization Research Laboratory
(RCRL) held its 2004 Annual Research
Review meeting and field trip October 4–8 here
in Austin.
The
meeting was attended by 42 geologists, geophysicists, and engineers
from 13 sponsoring companies. Presentations focused on the application
of new lidar methods for constructing 3-D outcrop geologic models,
descriptions, modeling and fluid flow of vuggy pore systems,
and advances in geostatistical analysis and seismic imaging.
The field trip included stops in the Sacramento Mountains, New
Mexico, and the Franklin Mountains, Texas, to examine carbonate
buildups and mega-karst features. Click

of the Houston Core Research Center presented
“The University of
Texas at Austin, Bureau of Economic Geology’s Core
and Sample Repositories,” at the
Fifth International Meeting of the National Geoscience
Data Repositories. The meeting was held at the
U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Virginia,
on September 21.
The Bureau was one of 3 state repositories represented at the

Bureau
Research Associate Laura Zahm recently
represented the Bureau—and shared exhibit booth
space with the Houston Geological Society—at
the Houston Gem and Mineral Society’s 51st
Annual Gem, Jewelry, Mineral, and Fossil Show,
which was held September 24–26. The exhibit focused
on outreach with elementary-age children and scouting
and featured four interactive
