RCRL team members (from left) Bob Loucks, Charlie Kerans, and Jerry Lucia, were in Houston on January 22 and 23 to teach a 2-day workshop titled Carbonate Reservoir Geology. It was one of the highlights of AAPG's Winter Education Conference. To look at a clickable pdf, click here. 01/30/04

On January 15, 2004, the Bureau and the Petroleum Technology Transfer Council (PTTC) Texas Region hosted a meeting at The University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) Center for Energy and Economic Diversification (CEED) in Midland. Dr. Steve Ruppel presented Integrated Synthesis of Permian Basin Depositional History and Stratigraphic Architecture: Data and Models for Recovering Existing and

Undiscovered Oil Resources. Click here for more information. 1/26/04

Dr. Kerry L. Sublette is director of the Center for Environmental Research and Technology and Sarkeys Professor of Environmental Engineering at The University of Tulsa. He also serves as the director of the Integrated Petroleum Environmental Consortium (IPEC).

PTTC Texas and Central Gulf Regions hosted more than 40 people at the Soil Remediation Workshop in Tyler, Texas, on January 21, 2004.

Workshop attendees learned how to cost-effectively remediate oil and brine spills using hands-on tools and teaching materials developed by Dr. Kerry L. Sublette, Director of Integrated Petroleum Environmental Consortium (IPEC). Attendees also learned how to evaluate vendor claims for such things as adding microbes, using surfactants, etc. Click here to get more information about this program and to visit the IPEC Web site. 1/26/04

Bureau researchers Hongliu Zeng and Tucker Hentz, together with a seismic stratal slice image interpreted by Bureau’s Offshore Secondary Gas Recovery project, are the highlight of the cover of the February 2004 issue of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin. The Bulletin features the scientists’ article “High-Frequency Sequence Stratigraphy from
Seismic Sedimentology: Applied to Miocene,Vermilion Block 50-Tiger Shoal Area, Offshore Louisiana.” 1/23/04
Bureau researcher Jean-Philippe Nicot was a guest presenter at the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association’s (TIPRO) Mid-Winter Policy Meeting in Fort Worth on January 12–13. Jean-Philippe presented “Please, Pass the Salt: Can the Oil Industry Benefit from Desalination Wastes?”

Keith W. Shanley of Stone Energy, LLC, in Denver, Colorado, was a guest speaker at the Bureau on Tuesday, January 13, 2004. His presentation was titled “Controls on Prolific Gas
Production from Low-Permeability Sandstone Reservoirs in Basin-Centered Regions: Implications from the Rocky Mountain Region for Resource Assessment, Prospect Appraisal, and Risk Analysis.” This work reexamines the widely accepted model for basin-centered gas, and comes to some new conclusions.   Applied Geodynamics Laboratory (AGL) bids farewell to Bruno Vendeville after 15 years of service. Bruno will be joining the faculty of the Université des Sciences et Technologies de Lille in Lille, France, on February 1. Bruno received a Ph.D. from the Université de Rennes in 1987 and a postdoc from Texas A&M in 1988. He then joined the Bureau of Economic Geology
in 1988 as the first hire for the newly formed AGL. Click here for more information.1/13/04
Bureau Director Scott Tinker, together with Dr. William Fisher, Jackson School Director, and Dr. Peter Flawn, President Emeritus, was invited to participate in the inaugural conference of the Texas Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine (“Academy”) that was held on January 6–7, 2004, in San Antonio. U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison served as the Conference Honorary Chairman. The newly established Academy “will serve as a vehicle to foster the next generation of scientists and to project Texas’ technical strengths to the rest of the nation.”
