September 2003
The 2003 AAPG International Conference and Exhibition took place September 21–24 in Barcelona, Spain. The conference, titled "Crossroads of Geology, Energy, and Cultures," was attended by many Bureau researchers. Click here for a list of their presentations. 09/12/03
L. Frank Brown, Jr. presented "Sequences, Depositional Systems, and Synsedimentary Tectonics, Oligocene Rocks, Corpus Christi Region, South Texas: Revisiting Mature Fields with New Prospecting Tactics" on Friday, September 19 as part of the Bureau's Technical Seminar Series.(Abstract) 09/17/03
Senior Research Scientist Bob Loucks presented a half-day seminar to the Roswell Geological Society on September 19, 2003, titled "Ellenburger Paleocave Reservoirs: Origins, Burial-Depth Modifications, Spatial Complexity, and Reservoir Implications." 09/23/03
Bureau Researcher Mike Hudec was an invited presenter at the 8th International Congress of the Brazilian Geophysical Society held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, September 14–18, 2003. The title of his talk, co-authored by Martin Jackson, was "Effects of Basement Uplift on Passive Margin Salt Basins: New Insights from Regional Section Restoration in the Kwanza
Basin, Angola." Following the meeting, Mike gave a one-day short course on salt tectonics, spent several days consulting with Petrobras' technical staff, and presented several talks at Petrobras Corporate University. The work with Petrobras' staff was provided as a benefit of their membership in the Applied Geodynamics Laboratory Industrial Associates Program. 09/19/03

On September 10, 2003, Research Scientist Alan Dutton presented "Characterization of Subsurface Contaminant Plumes at Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Sites" as part of a short course titled "Curso Sobre Contaminatión de Hidrocarburos en Suelo y Agua Subterránea, Fundamentos de Restauración" sponsored by Pemex Refinación; Centro de Geociencias, Campus Juriquilla, Querétaro; and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The short course, held in Mexico City, Mexico, from September 1–12, was attended by approximately 40 professionals. 09/15/03
Bureau Researcher Ramón Treviño was invited to present his poster titled "Defining Systems Tracts and Sequence Stratigraphic Architecture from Well Logs: Example from the Oligocene/Lower Miocene Section, Offshore Mustang Island, South Texas," at the 2003 AAPEX: AAPG Prospect and Property Expo held in Houston on September 9–11, 2003. Ramón's poster, coauthored with Bureau
researchers L. Frank Brown, Jr., and Robert G. Loucks, was originally presented at the AAPG 2003 Annual Convention in Salt Lake City. (Abstract)
Dr. Shirley Dutton participated in a field trip to the Frontier sandstone in Wyoming as part of the Wyoming Geological Association 2003 Field Conference in Casper on September 6–10. She presented a talk at the meeting titled, "Origin of calcite cement and influence on fluid flow in a deltaic sandstone, Frontier Formation." Photo taken by the field trip leader, Dr. Brian
Willis of Texas A&M University. 09/11/03
Dr. Robert G. Loucks presented "Origin of Ordovician Brecciated and Fractured Reservoirs; Paleocave, Thermobaric, Tectonic, or All the Above?" as part of the Bureau's Seminar Series. His presentation took place on Friday, September 12. (Abstract) 09/09/03
The Bureau's 2003 Fall Technical Seminar Series continued Friday, September 5, with a presentation by Dr. Scott W. Tinker and Dr. Eugene M. Kim. The title of this lecture was, "The Coming Gas Economy." (Details) 08/25/03
Bureau researchers Mike Hudec and Martin Jackson traveled to Houston on September 3–4 to attend a symposium titled "Africa: New Plays—New Perspectives." The meeting was
the second international symposium sponsored by the Houston Geological Society International Explorationists Group and the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain. Mike presented a poster titled, "Effects of Basement Uplift in Deepwater Kwanza Basin, Africa" (Abstract) and Martin gave an oral presentation titled, "Structural Restoration of Minibasins Translating Down a Basement Ramp, Kwanza Basin, Angola" (Abstract). 08/29/03

On Wednesday, September 3, 2003, Research Scientist Dr. Alan Dutton attended a Board of Directors meeting of the Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District in White Deer, Texas, and presented results of an analysis of historical rates of saturated-thickness change in the district's Ogallala aquifer. The following day he joined Ray Brady and Amy Crowell, Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District staff, on a tour of water supply and monitoring wells in the well-field operated in Roberts County by the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority. 09/05/03
