The annual technical review meeting for sponsors of the Reservoir Characterization Research Laboratory for Carbonate Studies (RCRL) was held in early October at Bureau headquarters in Austin. Representatives from 13 of RCRL’s 15 sponsors attended the meeting wherein outcrop studies, carbonate rock fabrics, and 3-D reservoir modeling and flow simulation were discussed.

The review was preceded by a field trip to two field areas. Charlie Kerans and Ted Playton led the first leg of the trip to examine early Permian slope and basin-floor carbonate reservoir analogs in the Victorio Canyon area of the Sierra Diablo Range north of Van Horn, Texas. The second leg of the trip was led by Jason Rush, who guided participants through Walnut Canyon, near White’s City, New Mexico, to examine the shelf-margin stratigraphy of the Tansill/Capitan system in the upper Permian.
