INFORMATION
Ing. Raúl Muñioz Leos has been Director General of Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) since President Fox's inauguration. A chemical engineer by training he has worked exclusively in the private sector and was CEO of DuPont, Mexico, prior to his appointment to PEMEX.

PEMEX is a nationalized enterprise (since 1937) and is central to Mexico's development process. It lead the income-earning sector until the government sought to diversity in the late 1980s, and as export oriented manufacturing overtook PEMEX's lead position. It is one of the largest single public enterprises in the world with over 140,000 employees and an annual income of over US$40 billion. It is currently ranked number 92 on the Global 500.

The principal challenges facing PEMEX today are:

  • To arrest the decline in known reserves by expanding exploration, especially in natural gas.
  • To enhance productivity and efficiency, thereby making reserves go further.
  • To improve business management and competitiveness.
