Smooth Estimates of Seismic Attributes

Sergey Fomel

Abstract:

Seismic attributes are an indispensable tool for visualizing and interpreting images of the Earth's subsurface. The use of seismic attributes has grown exponentially since the 1990’s, yet not every attribute passes the requirement of being physically meaningful, predictable, and indicative of stratigraphy. A new technique called "shaping regularization" leads to a robust and efficient estimation of meaningful seismic attributes. An especially powerful attribute is the local structural dip. Accurate estimates of structural dips can automate labor-intensive tasks in data processing and image analysis.
