| The
Bureau is proud to announce the promotion of Dr.
Stephen C. Ruppel to Senior Research Scientist.
This promotion is equivalent to Full Professor in the
University. Steve has acquired international recognition
for his pioneering research on silica-rich depositional
systems, and this research, based on years of work on
the Devonian chert in the Permian Basin, has produced
many of the basic concepts for our understanding of this

complex system. He is also recognized as an expert in applying
radiogenic isotopes to stratigraphy and in carbonate reservoir
characterization. He is widely published and has received a
variety of awards, including the AAPG’s prestigious Wallace
E. Pratt Award for Best Published Paper. Steve is currently
Principal Investigator of the Fullerton Field (West Texas) reservoir
characterization project. 03/30/04

A
large number of Bureau researchers participated at the
AAPG Hedberg Research Conference titled “Carbonate
Reservoir Characterization and Simulation: From Facies
to Flow Units” held in El Paso,
Texas, March
15–18. Three keynote presentations were |

given by Bureau researchers, including the lunch keynote talk
by Director Scott Tinker titled “Three
Generations of Reservoir Modeling.” Bob
Loucks served as a conference convenor and presented
“Overview of Paleocave Systems and Associated Suprastratal
Deformation.” Click

The
Bureau was well represented at the Texas General Land
Office Coastal Issues Conference in Corpus Christi March
10–12. Five Bureau researchers presented data, analysis,
and cutting-edge |

technology that generated much
interest and discussion. Jim Gibeaut presented “Topographic
Variations of Barrier Island Wetlands: Implications for Modeling
Change During Rising Relative Sea Level.”
[Powerpoint]
as well as “The
Texas Shoreline Change Project: Combining Lidar, Historical
Photography, and Ground Surveys to Measure Shoreline
Change Rates along Bay and Gulf Shorelines.”
[Powerpoint]
Tom Tremblay presented “Status
and Trends of Wetlands and Aquatic Habitats on Texas Barrier
Islands.” [Powerpoint]
and Rachel Waldinger presented “Preliminary
Analysis of Wetlands Status and Trends on Galveston Island.”
[Powerpoint]
Tiffany Hepner and John Andrews presented a
demonstration titled “3D
Virtual Reality Vision of the Texas Coast,”
which was shown continuously during the conference. 03/22/04 |

Long-time
researcher and one of the founding members of the Applied
Geodynamics Laboratory (AGL), Dan Schultz-Ela,
has left the Bureau to return to his roots in western
Colorado. His new life will include raising horses, finishing
his eco-friendly home, teaching high school science, and—good
news for researchers in the AGL— continuing his
valuable expertise as a consulting mathematical |

researchers recently traveled to El Paso, Texas, to attend
the Southwest Section AAPG 2004 Meeting that was held
March 6–-9. Research Scientist Steve Ruppel

February 18 and 19, 2004, UT Department of Geological
Sciences Ph.D. candidate Tarek A. Elshayeb
and Floyd “Bo”
Henk of Pacheron Group held their second core
workshop at the Austin Core Research Center for a limited
audience of geologists, geophysists, and reservoir engineers.
The workshop, based on Tarek's Ph.D. studies and research,
was titled “The
