| More
than 60 people from 40 companies attended 2 meetings--one
in Midland on November 30 and one in Houston on December
7 —to learn about a new BEG program that will
create an integrated depositional and stratigraphic
synthesis of the Permian Basin. This synthesis will
result in an integrated database of geological, geophysical,
and petrophysical information that will provide fundamental
information for guiding future exploration and development
of the remaining hydrocarbon resources in the Permian
Basin. Partial funding for the |

Pinnacle
Technologies, Inc., recently conducted a study
for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
on hydraulic fracturing of deep gas wells. In the study,
workers assessed current and projected U.S. deep-gas-drilling
activity; reviewed rock mechanics and fracture |

growth in deep, high-pressure/temperature wells; and studied
a few wells in selected areas.
On
December 8, more than 80 professionals from industry attended
a PTTC Texas Region workshop at the Houston
Research Center. The workshop covered results of
the Pinnacle study, including case histories that reviewed
fracture design, execution, and evaluation.

| On
Thursday, December 2, 2004, 5th grade students from Saint
Andrews School in Austin visited BEG for a classroom
tour. Students, teachers, and parents were treated to hands-on
activities and presentations by researchers Ramón
Treviño, Ursula Hammes, John
Andrews, and Sue Hovorka. Amanda
Masterson, Claudia Gerardo, and
Tatiana Fomel served as tour guides.

The
featured speaker at Friday’s seminar was BEG’s own
Charlie Kerans, who presented “3D
