On April 25, 2003, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Geology Foundation and celebrate the completion of the expanded geology building, The University of Texas John A. and Katherine G. Jackson School of Geosciences presented a special symposium: "Priorities in the Geosciences." This event marked the Dedication of the John A. and Katherine G. Jackson Geological Sciences Building. Director Scott Tinker chaired a National Research Council open session workshop titled "U.S. Natural Gas Supply and Demand Projections" in Washington D.C. on April 21, 2003. The workshop, sponsored by DOE Fossil, U.S. Mineral Management Service, and the U.S. Geological Survey, was attended by 80 representatives from a broad spectrum of Federal agencies, congressional staff, and the private sector. Former UT Professor and Bureau scientist Dr. Gus K. Eifler Jr., passed away April 18, 2003, in Austin, Texas. He was born in Taylor, Texas, on February 14, 1908. Gus worked at the Bureau from 1972 to 1973, and contributed extensively to the Geologic Atlas of Texas. [Obituary] 04/22/03

On April 12, 2003, Bureau researchers Charlie Kerans,
Jerry Lucia, and Bob Loucks led a fieldtrip for 55 attendees of the one-day GCSSEPM/South Texas Geological Society conference. The destination of the fieldtrip was the Red Bluff Creek area to examine Lower Glen Rose rudist reef complexes and associated facies. The guidebook for this fieldtrip is titled "Cretaceous Buildups and Paleokarst Systems, Lake Medina Area, South Texas." Tom Fett of Medina Lake organized the trip and Tom and his wife Kris hosted a lunch at their house where the group photo was taken. [Conference abstracts]. 04/14/03

Bureau stratigraphers Dave Jennette and Jerry Bellian took a group of deepwater explorationists from Kerr-McGee on a field trip to the coastal exposures of southern California April 10–16 . The group examined lithofacies and architecture of channelized slope reservoirs from the Capistrano and Ardath/Scripps Formations. This excursion was the first clastics fieldtrip that combined the BEG's lidar technology with conventional field trip experiences. 04/10/03
