The basics of seismic stratigraphy

Most reservoirs represent some small part of the conceptual depositional sequence (below). Seismic data, particularly in "fast" (high density, high velocity) carbonate settings, does not commonly have the resolution needed to interpret the stratigraphic detail required to understand the reservoir.

 

Therefore, it is critical in most cases to interpret the stratigraphic succession using core and log data initially, then use the understanding gained to create depositional models that can be used to interpret and incorporate seismic data into the overall model.
