Deformation of Sediment and Sedimentary Rock at Scales from Grains to Basins: Field and Laboratory Observations, Theoretical and Numerical Models
Peter Eichhubl, Chair
Sponsor: Tectonophysics
CoSponsor: Mineral and Rock Physics
Sediments and sedimentary rocks display a wide range of deformation processes and structural styles that reflect their porous and granular nature, variable loading conditions and loading rates in active depositional settings, and complex chemical water-rock interactions far from chemical equilibrium. A basic understanding of these multi-scale deformation processes is a prerequisite
for successful energy and water resource management and natural hazard mitigation. This session is designed to cover the following spectrum of research activities: geological field investigations ranging from kilometer-scale folds and faults to meter-scale fractures, solution surfaces, and deformation bands; laboratory model experiments and rock mechanics testing; and theoretical, numerical and computational modeling with an emphasis on deformation mechanisms, stress-strain and scaling relations, and coupled mechanical and chemical processes. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to processes of deformation localization, the characterization and modeling of brittle failure, fracture propagation, and granular flow, the geometry and interactive mechanical behavior of folds, faults, and fractures, and the coupling between brittle deformation and dissolution/precipitation reactions.
