HANDIL FIELD, INDONESIA

The Handil Field, discovered in 1974, is located in the North Mahakam area along the southern edge of the modern day Mahakam Delta in the eastern margin of Indonesia's Kutei Basin. These are Tertiary-age deposits. The principal hydrocarbon source rocks are delta plain coals which, due to the high subsidence rates in the delta, commonly remain well landward of the late highstand shelf edge. Hydrocarbons typically occur beneath the best seal interval, sometimes becoming trapped in the hydrocarbon waste zone of poorly developed transgressive systems tracts.

Two types of incised valley fills occur in the Handil field stratigraphic section. Sand-rich valleys incised into underlying falling stage tidal bar complexes form flow pathways linking production from separate reservoir groups. Heterolithic deposits filling incised valleys dissect underlying deposits and form flow barriers to what may have been at one time a single reservoir complex of amalgamated tidal bars.
