GOALS

Goals for the CRG include:

1. Complete the integrated regional framework of the Sego Sandstone using outcrop and subsurface data. Summarize large-scale facies changes, continuity and character of key stratigraphic surfaces, and the 3-D geometry of incised valleys, valley fill, and shelf sandstone bodies. A summary report will be prepared about this aspect of the Sego study.

2. Lead a fall field workshop on the Sequence Stratigraphy and Reservoir Architecture of Tide-influenced Shoreline Systems in the Late Cretaceous Sego Sandstone and associated units.

3. Prepare summary sheets and products that capture the quantitative nature of Sego architectural elements and sequence character.

4. Synthesize the results of CRG and earlier studies in four different fluvial/deltaic systems of the Western Interior-the Ferron, Fall River, Frewens, and Sego Sandstones. This process will focus on comparative analysis of the genetic similarities and differences among the systems, among the elements within the systems, and the character and occurrence of those elements. Examples would include

  • a summary of the main facies within each formation, including information on grain size, sedimentary structures, and permeability,
  • a summary of geometry and dimensions of sandstone bodies in each system,
  • a compilation of variograms of key facies within each sandstone,
  • comparisons of tectonic setting and accommodation rates of the formations, and
  • comparisons of cement distribution within each formation. This type of concise synthesis of the information that was developed over the course of the project would enable the sponsors to more readily recognize and apply these outcrop analogs to their own subsurface fields.
