North bank of the Orinoco River near Barrancas showing deeply weathered Pleistocene alluvial deposits. Historical sediments with archeologic remains veneer the soil profile developed in fluvial sands. The soil profile comprises from top to bottom a blackish-gray horizon of organic accumulation, a light-gray sandy leached horizon (note burrows in friable sand), a reddish-brown clayey horizon, and light-brown crossbedded sands that also partly underlie the sloped area.
