The Bureau
of Economic Geology is a major research
entity of The University of
Texas at Austin and is one of the largest
public-sector geoscience organizations in the United States. The Bureau staff of almost
200 includes 85 geologists, engineers, geophysicists, hydrologists, and resource
economists, about 60 percent of whom have a Ph.D. degree. Approximately two-thirds of the
Bureaus work involves hydrocarbon assessment and recovery, a large part of which is
being undertaken in Venezuela. The remaining one-third of the Bureau's work is primarily
environmental, coastal, and hydrologic studies. Funding sources are from state, federal,
nonprofit, and industrial entities. The results of Bureau work are disseminated through
contract reports delivered to funding agencies, bulletins, reports, circulars, special
publications, and maps published by the Bureau (nearly 2,250), and through numerous
articles published in national and international peer-reviewed journals.
