Preliminary mapping of land-cover units shows the interplay of depositional geology with the distribution of plant communities. The plot below shows the distribution of plant communities on the Orinoco Delta. The coastal area of the delta is dominated by mangroves except in the northwest part, where there are forests and mangroves. The southeast part of the lower delta is dominated by forests while the northern part of the lower delta includes forests with savannas, swamps, and local areas of palms. The southern part of the upper delta includes savannas, forests, and swamps. The northern part of the upper delta has forests, savannas, and palms. Click here for a more detailed look at the northwest part of the delta. |
