Indigenous Warao indians and other inhabitants have adapted to high water levels in the lower delta plain by building elevated dwellings on poles that in some instances are located in the middle of large channels and bays.   This temporary dwelling in Laguna Cocuina was used by BEG researchers in March 1998, and it has subsequently collapsed.
