State delivers screening criteria for plant sites
November 01, 2005 — Associated Press
Texas officials Tuesday released to regional councils of government screening criteria for possible
sites for a $1 billion federal energy generation project.
The FutureGen project of the U.S. Department
of Energy would design, build and operate a 275-megawatt plant that produces electricity and hydrogen
removed from coal with almost no pollution.
Railroad Commission Michael Williams has been named chairman
of the FutureGen Texas Advisory Board. On Tuesday, the board sent out screening maps to the state's 24
regional councils of government, each of which can submit a candidate site.
The DOE is expected to
formally solicit site proposals from states early next year, and the advisory board will be responsible
for advancing one proposal for Texas.
The maps developed by the state Bureau of Economic Geology will
help local officials determine how their areas stack up against the geologies and oil and coal reserves
of others. The councils of government must formally express interest in the project by Nov. 16 if they
intend to submit a site proposal. |

Ed Mayberry at KUHF Houston Public Radio filed a story on the FutureGen Industry Briefing BEG hosted in Houston.
Broadcast: Friday, October 07, 2005
"Industry representatives recently heard details about the proposed 275-megawatt near-zero emissions
fossil fuels power plant at a Bureau of Economic Geology public meeting here in Houston. The FutureGen Texas
plant would create hydrogen from the coal gasification process utilized in making electricity, according to the
Bureau's Jay Kipper.
Jay Kipper audio 1 (from KUHF)
Kipper says coal is plentiful, and will serve us well if it can be cleanly used. The Bureau of Economic
Geology has been charged with coordinating the state's site-selection process.
Jay Kipper audio 2 (from KUHF)
The billion-dollar FutureGen Texas project is envisioned as a public-private sector partnership, and Kipper
says it's an opportunity for industry and the environment to work together." |

Gov. Rick Perry submitted Texas' final offers to the FutureGen Industrial
Alliance for Jewett or Odessa to become home to the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE)
FutureGen project, a $1.5 billion public-private initiative to build an innovative, near-zero
emissions coal power plant. [Press Release] |

Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Michael L. Williams, who chairs the
FutureGen Texas team, today urged that Texas be selected as the site for FutureGen, saying the state is
committed to being a full partner in the $1.5 billion project. [Press Release] |

After more than two years of intensive development the FutureGen Texas team submitted its Best and Final Offers for both proposed Jewett and Odessa sites. The site selection announcement will be made by the FutureGen Alliance in late fall of 2007. |
Bureau Director and FutureGen Texas Team Leader Scott Tinker was featured prominently in the television show State of Tomorrow, which aired on Texas PBS stations July 5. The 13-episode series examines some of the biggest challenges facing Texans today. The episode featuring Dr. Tinker, titled “The Future of Energy,” delves into how we can sustain energy supplies, not only of our own country, but other |
 |
countries as well. FutureGen is one of the solutions examined in this episode as energy experts from across Texas discuss oil recovery technologies, alternative energy sources such as nuclear and solar energy, and innovations such as cleaner-burning coal power plants.
The Bureau, under the direction of State Geologist Scott W. Tinker, has been charged by the State of Texas to bring FutureGen to Texas. Both of the proposed sites, Jewett and Odessa, were selected as finalist sites for FutureGen. The FutureGen Alliance has announced plans to select FutureGen’s host site by fall 2007. |

Members of the FutureGen Texas team attended the Energy Leadership Forum in Austin, Texas on March 6-7, 2007. Hosted by Americans for Balanced Energy Choices (ABEC) and the Clean Coal Technology Foundation of Texas (CCTFT), the forum provided information and discussion on how clean coal technologies can help Texas meet the challenge of increased energy production with reduced emissions. |

On Thursday, May 4th, the FutureGen Texas team took a breath following
submission of two FutureGen Host Site proposals to the FutureGen Industrial Alliance
on behalf of the State of Texas. The gathering, hosted by Bureau Director Scott W. Tinker
and Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams and attended by many of the folks making
up the FutureGen Texas team, was held at the Iron Cactus in Austin. |
