Accommodations, food, other logistics

Transportation, room and board in Scotland and London will be provided, but participants or their home institutions or departments must pay for travel to London.

Travel to London

Overseas travel to and from London is your responsibility. Posted round-trip airfares as of February 2005 are approximately $700, but these prices will likely change and may rise as summer approaches. Book your flight early.

Discount tickets for students are available. Some information on discount student tickets can be found at: Student Tickets [Sta Travel]. (We do not endorse this vendor, but it looks like it might be a good source of low-cost student tickets).

Arrival in London

A staff member will meet the group at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2005, at Burlington House, Picadilly, central London. Our initial meeting in London will last about 1 hour. Burlington House is the home of the Geological Society.

Public rail transport is available from Heathrow and Gatwick to central London. We recommend that you travel from the airport directly to Euston Station London and check your field luggage at the station as we will depart from London Euston Station on the evening of the 30th (the day of the initial meeting at Burlington House). It is a short bus or subway ride (or walk) from Euston to Burlington House. Purchasing a day pass for public transportation may be convenient as you will have most of this first day in London free to view the city and recover from jet lag.

Travel in UK

Participants will meet at Burlington House, London, at 10 am on Saturday, July 30, 2005 for an introductory lecture with the balance of the day in London free for visiting the Geological Museum and Natural History Museum. The field group will depart from Euston Station, London via Caledonian Sleeper train at 7 p.m. on the evening of July 30th for Fort William, Scotland. The group will travel by van to Oban, via ferry and fishing boats to Precambrian glacial deposits of the Garvellachs, by van to Inverness, Cromarty and the Great Glen fault, to Ullapool, and the Moine Thrust Zone at Assynt and Loch Eriboll. The group will conduct a mapping exercise near Cape Wrath in the far northwest Highlands, and a project in volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Skye. The group will return to London by Caledonian Sleeper on 13 August. For more information see the daily itinerary.

Required field gear

Participants should bring a light sleeping bag. Sturdy leather boots, reliable rain gear and sweaters/wind gear will make field work in the Highlands more comfortable. Camping equipment will not be needed. A list of recommended gear will be issued to participants upon acceptance in the program. Contact us if you need advice.

Contacts in UK
