Readings [FRAC password required] Manuscripts & Paper PDFs

Text: Oldroyd, David R. The Highlands Controversy: Constructing Geological Knowledge through Fieldwork in Nineteenth-Century Britain . 448 p., illustrations. 1990 Series: (SCF) Science and Its Conceptual Foundations series. Univ. Chicago Press.

Fall 2006 theme is the construction of geologic knowledge through field work, microscopy, and modeling. In a departure from previous years we will use a published textbook that recounts the history of the scientific discovery of thrusts as one starting point for discussion along with (as before) readings of our own draft papers, thesis drafts, etc. We are also planning to conduct a class field trip at the end of the spring semester (June 2007) in NW Scotland. More info to be posted August 2006. Class leaders: Laubach, Eichhubl, Olson, Marrett, Bonnell, Lander, Milliken. Contact Laubach if you would like more information.

About Master Class

Writing workshop, critical review of literature, discussion of current research topics and reports on graduate student research in quantitative structural geology, geomechanics and structural diagenesis.

Meetings last about 2 hrs and generally start at 3 pm. Venue is an off-campus location. See the e-mail alerts for last minute plans.
