ALO/USAID Grant to UH IELE to partner with Bangladesh University

"Oil, Gas & Power Value Creation" Workshop in Bangladesh
(January 9-12, 2005)

At the beginning of January, Mr. Fisoye Delano, Senior Researcher, of UH IELE, jointly with Prof. Mohammad Tamim and Prof. Ijaz Hossain from PMRE/BUET, conducted a four-day workshop on Oil, Gas & Power Value Creation. The workshop materials were jointly developed by the UH-IELE team and PMRE/BUET. The primary goal of the workshop was to introduce key players in the Bangladesh natural gas sector to the concept of value creation along the energy value chain. The workshop was also instrumental in enhancing PMRE/BUET's capacity to deliver the materials in future workshops. Download workshop agenda

Twelve delegates from various energy organizations in Bangladesh attended the workshop, including Gas Transmission Co. Ltd, Titas Gas Transmission & Distribution Co. Ltd, Petrobangla, Bangladesh Gas Fields Co. Ltd (A Petrobangla Co.), Islamic University of Technology, and Ministry of Power (Energy & Mineral Resources Hydrocarbon Unit). Based on the evaluation surveys by the participants, the workshop was found very valuable. Requests were made to organize follow-up sessions to focus on various concepts introduced during this workshop. The participants expressed that the material will be instrumental in their current jobs.


During the visit, Mr. Delano also had an opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of the natural gas sector in Bangladesh by active participation in deliberations with course participants. The visit also strengthened the existing cordial rapport with Prof. M. Tamim of PMRE and Prof. Ijaz Hossain of the Chemical Engineering Department. Discussions were also held on the next round of partnership activities which involve visits of Prof. Hossain and Dr. Mahbubur Rahman to Houston, starting in May 2005. The two professors will be in Houston to attend the UH IELE annual program "New Era in Oil, Gas & Power Value Creation."
