Stratigraphic settings and gas resources of organic-rich shale in the eastern United States
Dr. Christopher S. Swezey
U.S. Geological Survey, Reston, VA
Most organic-rich shale in the eastern United States may be grouped according to stratigraphic and depositional setting into five categories. Commercial gas production has been established from one of these shale categories (Marine shale that overlies carbonate platform deposits and that is part of a 10-40 Ma interval of siliciclastic rocks), but commercial gas production has yet to be established from the other four categories of organic-rich shale in the eastern United States.
